Introduction to the hardware aspects of digital computers, modern logic concepts, problem solving and design principles, and the vocabulary and philosophy of the digital world. Topics include logic gates, flip-flops, optimization, finite state machines, sequential logic design, digital systems, CAD tools, VHDL, and implementation technologies. Includes a laboratory component.
The course develops the ability to apply digital logic to system design and to use advanced CAD tools. Students work through combinational and sequential design, number systems and arithmetic circuits, and FPGA-based VHDL labs spanning basic gates through algorithmic state machines.
Prerequisite
MATH 24005, or MATH 24004 / MATH 240H4, with a grade of C or better.
